[~*~] Cloud vs Hopkins this Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York!

By Allan Fox: 48-year-old Bernard Hopkins (52-6-2, 32 KO’s) has a critical battle this Saturday night against IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud (24-0, 19 KO’s) at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Hopkins has had a two-year dry spell in between victories, and he can’t afford to lose to Cloud if he wants to remain relevant at 175. Hopkins, #2 WBA, #6 IBF, #9 WBO, is still ranked high despite not having won a fight since 2011, but those inflated rankings won’t continue for very long with Hopkins not winning and fighting only once a year.

Hopkins fought only once in 2012 in losing to Chad Dawson by a 12 round majority decision in April. If Hopkins takes another year-long break after the Cloud fight, he’ll be 49-years-old and it’s just hard to imagine him doing anything at that ripe old age.

Cloud, 30, has been underwhelming champion since picking up the IBF title off of Clinton Woods in 2009. Cloud has successfully defended his IBF strap four times, but mostly against weak opposition. He’s not fought anyone that could really test him like Dawson, Beibut Shumenov, Jean Pascal or Nathan Cleverly.

He’s fought strictly the guys below him, and not looked all that great. In his last fight, he struggled to beat Gabriel Campillo by a 12 round split decision in February last year in a fight that few boxing fans felt he won. Campillo was able to land clean shots all night long, and if not for Cloud finishing strong in the last four rounds, he likely would have lost the fight.

A younger version of Hopkins would totally dominate Cloud. However, Hopkins has aged and he might not be able to throw enough punches to get the victory. It’s going to take a high work rate for Hopkins to win this fight, and it’s going to be difficult for him to do that when he’s shown that he doesn’t have the engine to throw punches like that anymore.

[~*~] Can Hopkins beat Cloud on Saturday?

By Thomas Cowan: Not too many boxing fans are backing Bernard Hopkins to beat IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud on Saturday. There are many reasons that most people fancy Cloud to win, there’s 48 reasons to be precise, but I’m not sure people should write The Executioner off so quickly.

Hopkins has been dismissed as “too old” for years but he’s still going. A lot of people thought he would be completely outclassed by Joe Calzaghe but Hopkins gave Calzaghe the toughest fight of his career and was very unlucky to lose to a split-decision. I scored the fight as a draw. He was also written off as a no-hoper when he agreed to fight Jean Pascal. He got a draw in the first fight and then defeated the Canadian to break George Foreman’s record as the oldest ever world champion.

Obviously, Hopkins looked pretty poor last time out against Chad Dawson but I really don’t think Cloud is in Dawson’s class. Cloud beat Gabriel Campillo in his last fight by split decision and I thought that was the one of the worst decisions I’ve ever seen. Campillo was down twice in the 1st but after that he completely dominated Cloud and the decision was loudly booed by the crowd.

If Hopkins is to win this fight then he really needs to use his brain. Cloud’s going to be a lot faster than him but looking at Cloud’s record, even a 48 year old Hopkins is probably the best opponents he’s been in with, so I don’t expect him to be taking the fight lightly. If Hopkins can hit Cloud with some decent shots early on, then the champion could panic the way he did against Campillo after the Spaniard started to dominate.

I’m finding it really hard to predict this one, but I’m going to put my neck on the line and back the aging Hopkins to finished the night with his hand raised.
